Boccia is a big hit with club members
WORCESTER’S first club dedicated to the Paralympic sport Boccia is scoring with players in the city.
Boccia is a precision ball sport, related to bowls, which is contested at local, national and international levels by people with physical disabilities.
The Worcester club has just launched at Perdiswell Leisure Centre in Bilford Road on Tuesday afternoons.
As well as Boccia itself, it offers a wide range of games aimed at building related skills to its members.
The club has been launched by Worcester City Council and Disability Sport Worcester for local disabled people aged eight and over.

Durham lad Chris named in England boccia squad
A NORTH-East boccia player has been named in the England squad for two forthcoming international matches.
Chris Jackson, 22, has been playing the wheelchair sport, similar to boules, since he was at school.
Now Mr Jackson, who has muscular dystrophy, has been included in the England squad to play Norway and the Czech Republic in Oslo and Prague in late May and early June, respectively.

A DISABLED sportsman is celebrating being picked for England.
Chris Jackson, who plays a bowls game called boccia, is to represent his country at tournaments in Oslo and Prague.
“I’ve been playing the game since I was 10 years old,” said the 22-year-old, from Carrville, Durham City.
“It was always my dream to get into the national team, so I am delighted to be selected.”

Last chance for entries to represent Epsom and Ewell in Boccia
Young people wanting to represent Epsom and Ewell at the Surrey Youth Games have just days to register for training sessions and trials.
Free trials and training sessions for the borough’s squad have already begun this month and will take place at various clubs across the borough.
Young people aged between seven and 16 are needed for events which include Boccia, Cricket, Tag Rugby, and Tennis teams.

Schoolboy Seamus Morrison has today been taking on Lincoln Barclays staff and customers in a sports challenge to help fund his trip to the 2013 World Dwarf Games in the USA. Seamus, from Sutton-on-Trent, will represent Great Britain in boccia, a target ball sport like petanque and bowls, discus, javelin, shot put, swimming, football and table tennis. More than 80 countries will compete in Michigan in August – four times gold medallist swimmer Ellie Simmonds is a previous competitor in the games. Barclays has pledgd to double whatever is raised today during Seamus’s four-hour non-stop boccia challenge at the bank in Tritton Road.
Central American Para Games open today
The Central American Para Games are due to open in the Costa Rican capital of San José today as 250 athletes from six countries get ready to compete for medals in five sports.
Athletes from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and host nation Costa Rica will go head-to-head in athletics, goalball, powerlifting, swimming and wheelchair basketball.
Athletics events will take place at Costa Rica’s recently completed National Stadium; the $100 million (£65 million/€75 million) 35,000-capacity stadium in La Sabana Metropolitan Park, which was gifted to the nation by the Chinese Government.
The National Gymnasium will host basketball, boccia, powerlifting and goalball, as the María del Milagro Paris pool will stage swimming events.
Australian World Dwarf Games team boosts numbers for double medal effort
The 39-member team is in the midst of training for the August Games, which will be held at Michigan State University in the US.
It is only the second time Australia will send a team to the tournament.
In 2009, Australia won 24 medals, including eight gold, from the event held in Ireland. With almost double the number of competitors this time around, expectations are high to improve on that, according to the team’s oldest member Margherita Coppolino.
“In 2009 we only had a small team of 15 and the only team sport we had was basketball,” the 53-year-old said.

WindReach Boccia Players Represent Bermuda
WindReach Bermuda said today [Apr 17] that five of their Adaptive Sports participants will be travelling to Montreal, Canada to represent Bermuda in Boccia at the Defi Sportif Competition from April 25th – 28th.
The Defi Sportif Competition attracts approximately 4000 para athletes from around the world who compete in 13 different sports.
The Bermuda team includes Livingston Tuzo, Jaime Brangman, Yushae Simmons, Jamal Bean and Steve Wilson. They will be accompanied by Troy Farnsworth (WindReach Adaptive Sports Coordinator) and a support team.

Fiona reaches for boccia success
FIONA Lyons, 25, of Cleveland is on her way to a place in the 2016 Paralympic team in Rio, following recent boccia success.
Most recently, she gained a silver plate a the Queensland titles, pipped by a New South Wales player.
Fiona has been the gold plate holder at State and national level for several championships now.
Last year, she was ranked 27th in the world and the Australian team 13th in the world.
