Camboccia will be represented by two teams in the inaugural National Boccia Super League next year following success at the Boccia England team finals in Nottingham.

Both the Cannons and the Scorpions finished in the top six at the tournament to seal their place in the national elite next season.

Scorpions finished just outside the medals after losing 6-5 to Boccia Durham in the third-place play-off having gone down 13-2 to Bristol outfit Paul’s Place in the semi-finals.

They had earlier beaten the Breakaways 6-5 and Stockport 7-3 to top their group.

Hope Valley College (Derbyshire) win Boccia bronze

Teams from Harpur Hill Primary School and Hope Valley College were among those to win medals at the Derbyshire School Games Event.

A team from Harpur Hill Primary School (top) won silver in the QuadKids Primary competition, while a team from Hope Valley College (below) won bronze in the Boccia. Both were representing High Peak.

The event was held at Trent College in Long Eaton last Tuesday. The opening ceremony included a performance by Derbyshire School Games Music Competition winners St Philip Howard School.

Primary and secondary school teams representing Furness, South Lakes and Copeland took on teams from Allerdale, Carlisle and Eden at the 2013 Cumbria School Games festival in Carlisle

The festival saw 650 school children represent their districts in tennis, hockey, netball, tri golf, table tennis, pan disability football, table cricket, boccia and orienteering.

Team Allerdale were first in the large schools tennis competition, just beating Copeland in second place and Furness took third place.

Securing an early win for Furness in table tennis were a mixed team including George Hastwell School, which also came second in pan disability football and third in boccia.

Paralympic Boccia gold medallist Dan Bentley inspires Dunmow children

EX-Bolton star Fabrice Muamba, who suffered a cardiac arrest during an FA Cup game at Tottenham Hotspur last year, has told the Observer that it is his job now to “get the message across” to youngsters to live healthily.

Muamba, along with Dunmow’s own Paralympic Boccia gold medallist Dan Bentley, was on hand to headline Flitch Green Academy’s charity sports day, nicknamed ‘Super Saturday’.

The day, set up to introduce the children of the housing development and surrounding areas to the sports available at local clubs, was raising money for Hearts and Goals, a charity which increases awareness of sudden cardiac arrest, of which Muamba is a patron, and the Saturday Play Club, a Saffron Walden charity for young people with disabilities.

Boccia featured at Derbyshire School Games

AROUND 1,000 youngsters took part in the Derbyshire School Games this week.

The event was held at Trent College in Long Eaton on Tuesday – in glorious sunshine.

School teams represented their districts in Mini Tennis, Tri-Golf, QuadKids athletics (primary) QuadKids athletics (secondary), cricket, tennis, rounders, touch rugby, Boccia Plus and Sportshall Athletics Plus.

Special guests at the event included Derbyshire Paralympians Andrea Green and Leon Taylor

Boccia featured at Herts Youth Games

The Borough of Broxbourne were well represented and enjoyed success as young people ranging in age from under-nines to under-15s competed in 10 different indoor and outdoor sports at Wodson Park , Ware.Outdoors there was football, golf, hockey and netball while Boccia, table tennis, badminton, basketball, athletics and fencing took place in the sports hall.Broxbourne Council’s community development team organised and managed the Broxbourne team who had an extremely successful day with victories in the cricket, golf and netball and second places in the Boccia and hockey events.

Boccia starts of the future being sought at Norfolk School Games

Aiming to find the Paralympic stars of the future, the Playground to Podium programme at the Norfolk School Games targeted talented young athletes and offered pathways for future training.

Yesterday’s events saw youngsters tackle cricket, goal ball and boccia – learning new skills and competing to win.

Ellen Vanlint, sports development officer, said: “It’s been good for them to test their abilities against others, and see what opportunities there are with different clubs.

“We hope to continue to improve next year and develop into the partnership teams – where both disabled and mainstream athletes compete for their partnerships.”

Boccia Plus included in county sports tournament

Pupils from five High Peak schools are among those to have been selected to compete at the Derbyshire School Games.

The teams will represent their school sport partnership area and compete with almost 1,000 young people from across the county at next Tuesday’s event, which will be held at Trent College in Long Eaton

Inter-school competitions have been taking place to determine which schools will qualify to enter a team to represent their area in either mini tennis, Tri-Golf, Quadkids athletics, cricket, tennis, rounders, touch rugby, Boccia Plus and Sportshall Athletics Plus.

Teams from Harpur Hill Primary School have qualified to compete in mini tennis, Tri-Golf and the Quadkids athletics year five and six competition, while a team from Chapel-en-le-Frith High School has qualified to compete in the Quadkids athletics year seven competition.

SportsAble launches fundraising week

‘DO SOMETHING different for disability’ is the cry from a disabled sports club as it launches a fundraising week.

SportsAble, based in Braywick Road, Maidenhead, is calling on companies, schools, pubs and all manner of social gatherings to raise money and awareness of the charity, which provides sports facilities for disabled people across Berkshire, to get involved in the week which starts today and runs to Saturday, July 13.

Ideas on how to get involved include dress-down days, sponsored events or even a good old-fashioned tin collection.

Melissa Paulden, marketing manager and boccia coach at the club, said: “Our aim is to raise money to help our current and future athletes, but our overriding aim is to not let the flame of last year’s London 2012 Paralympic Games die out.”

Boccia star Joshua bags a medal

Boccia player Joshua Rowe helped Great Britain bag team gold at the European Boccia Championships in Portugal.

He teamed-up with London Olympics bronze medal Paralympians to beat the hosts in a tight final.

The 20-year-old, who used to live in Maddery and is a former pupil of Auchterarder High School, clocks-up hours of training at Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth.

His next competition is the Cheshire International in Wigan on July 26 and 27, which is a Teams and Pairs. Joshua will be playing in the ‘GB Team A’ side, together with David Smith and Dan Bentley.
